The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTA Teaching Hospital), Professor Olusegun Ojo, has paid tribute to the late Yoruba leader and Afenifere chieftain, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, describing him as a statesman whose advocacy and personal intervention were instrumental to the establishment of the hospital in Akure.
Ojo, in a condolence statement issued following Fasoranti’s death at the age of 100, said the late elder statesman’s contributions to education, healthcare, democratic governance and nation-building had left an enduring legacy that would continue to benefit generations.
He said Fasoranti’s intervention in securing the teaching hospital for Akure remained one of his significant contributions to the development of Ondo State, particularly in medical education and specialist healthcare delivery.
“We particularly recall with deep appreciation his pivotal role in the actualisation of the FUTA Teaching Hospital, Akure,” Ojo said.
“His advocacy, credibility, fatherly intervention and personal engagement with the Federal Government were instrumental in bringing the long-awaited teaching hospital to Akure.”
The CMD noted that the institution would continue to remember the late Afenifere leader for his commitment to initiatives capable of improving the lives of the people, adding that his contribution would remain relevant to healthcare delivery in Ondo State and beyond.
Ojo described Fasoranti as a teacher, school administrator, politician and pro-democracy activist who devoted his life to the pursuit of justice, equity, true federalism and good governance.
He said the late statesman, who served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State and led Afenifere for many years, distinguished himself through integrity, courage and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of the Yoruba people and Nigeria.
Beyond politics and public service, the CMD said Fasoranti was a visionary educationist whose influence extended to generations of students through institutions he established, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy, Igoba.
According to him, the schools reflect Fasoranti’s enduring belief in education as a tool for human development and his determination to create opportunities for future generations.
Ojo said the late elder statesman’s life demonstrated that meaningful leadership was measured not merely by positions held but by the institutions established, opportunities created and lives positively influenced.
He also described Fasoranti as a bridge-builder and a defender of the voiceless whose counsel transcended political affiliations, noting that his contributions to society would remain a source of inspiration long after his death.
“Pa Fasoranti lived a full, purposeful and impactful life,” he said, adding that although the country mourned his physical departure, his ideals and the institutions he helped build would continue to speak for him.
The CMD commiserated with the deceased’s immediate family, the leadership and members of Afenifere, the people of Akure, the Ond
